Momma, I have been there too..
I remember this day vividly... I was nearing the end of my second trimester of my first pregnancy, at CrossFit, doing the prescribed workout on a hot and humid day. Feeling good, my competitive side took over, and I pushed harder than I should have, going for the RX.
Afterward, I felt lightheaded, dizzy, my belly was bright red, and my uterus felt… off, with cramping that wouldn't subside (all was fine in the end). This experience highlighted how that athlete mentality we often have can be tricky to navigate during pregnancy (and postpartum). As athletes, we're used to pushing, and pregnancy can be a real adjustment. It certainly was for me.
I've been there in the postpartum phase too. I remember that feeling of not recognizing my body – the weakness, the breathlessness, the squishiness, and that anxiousness to get back to feeling strong and capable again, especially with lifting.
I vividly recall being just days postpartum, taking a walk around the neighborhood with my little one, and being surprised at how challenging even that felt. Then, a few weeks later, when I first touched a barbell, it felt unbelievably heavy.
After years of being strong and active, and even lifting through pregnancy, I wasn't prepared for that initial postpartum vulnerability. It was a significant part of my own struggle after having my first daughter. So much of who I am is tied to feeling strong and fit (and I know many of you feel the same way), so I understand how disheartening it can be when your body doesn't look or respond the way you expect early postpartum.
But, just like I developed a plan to navigate returning to strength after having my baby, I've also created a framework for maintaining your strength and performance throughout pregnancy and into postpartum.
That is when I developed my signature 3-phased approach – 'StrongHer Through Pregnancy' and 'Stronger After Baby' – and I am excited to share it with you in this training series.
