Momma, I have been there too..
Early postpartum hit hard with my first. The days were a blur of baby snuggles and a longing for my "old" body and athletic skills. I remember obsessing over nap schedules just to squeeze in a workout. The guilt was real, the stress was high, and I even felt some resentment toward my husband for his "effortless" gym time.
And not only did I struggle with the all or nothing mentality and guilt around my pre-baby workout expectations, I also struggled with intense back pain and it started early on, right as I was starting my recovery journey back to the barbell.
I struggled to even sit on my bed to breastfeed my first daughter. My tailbone and SI joint pain was so bad that it affected every single way I moved, sat, and lifted. On top of that, I was used to working out twice a day most days pre-kids, and all I wanted was to work out the way I used to, but my pre-baby routine felt impossible.
I felt stuck, either pushing too hard and tweaking my low back, or constantly starting over. The all or nothing voice in my head was constantly making things worse.
With my second baby, things actually felt so much better initially... until they didn’t. Around 5 months postpartum, my back pain started creeping back in and steadily got worse. I struggled just sitting in the recliner rocking her to sleep, and I could hardly bend over the crib without being in excruciating pain.
I was defeated. I felt like this was going to be my forever reality. But what I realized after my second postpartum journey was that I was so consumed with life that I was neglecting my own recovery. I was showing up and being consistent, but I was pushing way past my current limits. I was working hard, but I wasn’t doing the specific strength training I needed to actually heal for good.
I’m sharing this because I know so many of you are where I was, pushing through the pain or other pelvic floor dysfunction because you don't know another way. For one, you’ve been an athlete your entire life, so pushing through pain is second nature to you. Or you think it’s normal to have all of this while pregnant or after babies.Â
I’m not perfect, but I’ve learned how to build a body and a mindset that lasts. These days, when life happens or a workout gets interrupted, it doesn't send me into a tailspin. If my back feels off, I pivot and take a slower day. I’ve traded the all or nothing mindset for a foundation that actually holds up, and I’m a much stronger athlete because of it.
But I want to tell you this: it IS common to have these aches & pains, but it IS NOT normal. And there is a way out, a way to feel better, in less pain and confident in your movement again both in and out of the gym.Â
I see you, and that’s why I created The Why You're Having Back Pain After Babies and How to Fix It Free Training, the guidance I wish I had back then.Â
I have helped so many moms move away from just surviving the daily aches and that constant all or nothing mental battle. You don't have to live in physical pain, and you definitely don't have to live with the guilt of a missed workout.
Once I applied this method to my own recovery, everything changed. No more pain rocking my baby to sleep. No more fear bending over to do a Romanian Deadlift, picking up a heavy deadlift, or squatting on the rack. I learned that feeling strong and athletic again didn't require crazy hours in the gym, it required strategic, quality training for my future self.
